Snowy Retreat

Snowy Retreat
It snowed last week. It's mostly gone now, but oh my it was beautiful. I love snow. Fresh snow looks so clean, pure - and full of promise. It's exciting! My special treat this weekend was a retreat, 24 hours to think, read, write, imagine, relax. I loved it. In the spring, I'll be out again, looking for snowdrops and crocuses.

Silly treasure

Useless and beautiful

I promised myself I'd get one, this silly, useless, pretty thing. Luckily I found it at the thrift store. Het Goed is good! Found any treasures lately?

Pictures of me

I just discovered, to my delight, that one of the witty and talented women I've met this year in Hyde Park has a witty and wry blog - Fancy Toast. If you're not feeling tempted to click on that link - you must. I only looked for a minute but saw (1) googly eyes on the back of one very cute baby's head and (2) recipes for parrot. She also managed not one but two husband compliments. I should do that more often because mine really is great.

But here's the thing. If it weren't for her cute profile picture, I might not have realized she was really the Erielle I was looking for. I know her for something entirely different, namely Peanut's Music Together teacher. Food blogger? Now there's an unexpected surprise. It turns out not everyone puts everything out there all the time.

And this brings me to the thought that inspired this post. Anyone looking for me (the real life one with an actual name, although a terribly common one) would find "Notablogger" and a picture of a crocheted bird. What is that all about? Well, it's about needing to feel a bit protected from the exposure that comes with writing about all kinds of things here. For example, my knitting and sewing obsession is kind of private. In daily life, I don't actually have a circle friends who do hese things quite so obsessively. Our family's schedule doesn't really allow me to participate in much extra-curricular crafting, so joining crafting groups has been dicey, too. There's a great knitting group here in Hyde Park, but they meet on Mondays from 5-8. If I race over there in the car after dinner, I can squeeze in half an hour. Oh, and I have to take Pumpkin. Like a lot of things, this will probably change in time, but right now it's a bit frustrating.

So in a lot of ways, this is a very public but very private space where I get to explore who I want to be or wish I could be. My real life face is here, somewhere, I'm sure - but elusive. Like I'd like to think I am!

Mother's Day

There was a surprise on the camera last week. This grandma and Peanut are special buddies. They spent a lot of time together this spring, partly because grandma came to visit for six weeks. She took amazing care of our whole family and the dinner guests we invited as well.

This is my mama. She taught me to sew, crochet, and knit. She's a great cook. She's a fearless traveler. She's kind, generous, adventurous, and fun. She's also a bit wicked (that's a warning to those of you who really believe she never plays poker). She can talk to anyone and taught me that "the road is in your mouth," which means you can always ask if you need to know something. She is always there for me when I need it. That's now with kids and years ago when she flew to DC to take care of me when I had my wisdom teeth taken out.

I've taken her for granted too many times and am sure to do it again in the future. But today, for just a moment - thank you, mom. And by the way, aren't I lucky to have a reminder of her good looks at home every day?

A Reason

For some reason...

...there isn't a lot of blogging going on around here, or much of anything else for that matter. I've got grand plans and plenty 'o pictures waiting to be loaded onto computer and then to blog. But, everything is in a holding pattern for now. Our little lady is quite the hungry one. She lets us sleep three or four hours at a stretch some nights, but during the day, she prefers to nurse about every 90 minutes. I'm not a fan of one handed typing (although if we keep this up much longer, I might be induced to learn to like it), so I've been holding off on typing. Hopefully, that excuse will be read be the many friends who have emailed congratulations that are languishing unacknowledged in my inbox.

The good news is that our newest addition is doing quite well. She's almost back to her birth weight (8lbs) and a proficient pooper, We are so proud. Perhaps the most delightful development is Peanut's amazing fascination and affection for his little sister. He loves to just look at her when she's laying down. He always wants to know where she is and holds her or her hand as much as he can get away with. He's picked her up on his own a couple times. That's a heart attack for Mama, but she doesn't seem to mind - much. I'm not sure what kind of reaction I expected, but this one has been amazing. I wonder how this relationship will develop in the days, weeks, months, even years to come.

How about one of those pictures that usually doesn't make it for public viewing?

No infants (or toddlers) were hurt in the production of this image.

Inspired by this.

What we're doing

We're settling in to a bit of a routine here. That would be the diaper, nurse, sleep, nurse, nurse, sleep, diaper routine. Things are relatively laid back thanks to an incredible help in Grandma. She's our hero. Here are some pictures for your entertainment!

Peanut participating in a midwife home visit.

Our first outing - to the hospital for a blood test (ick).

Just being gorgeous.
